Interview with Naomi James on Fashion, Influence, and Personal Stories
Jimmy: Welcome, Naomi! We’re thrilled to dive into the fashion abyss with you. Let’s stir some controversy, shall we?
Naomi James: Oh, I’m ready for it, Jimmy. Let’s do it!
Jimmy: Why do you think Utah, not exactly known as a fashion capital, has such a vibrant fashion blogging scene?
Naomi: It’s those dramatic landscapes, Jimmy! They make excellent backdrops for Instagram, and you know what they say—location, location, location. Plus, we Utahns have hidden fashionista talents!
Jimmy: Fashion and social media—what’s your take? Are we losing authenticity with so much focus on likes and hashtags?
Naomi: It’s a double-edged sword. On one hand, it spreads the word faster; on the other, it sometimes feels like it’s a numbers game, rather than quality content.
Jimmy: Let’s talk about influencers. Do you think the world needs more of them or less?
Naomi: Well, if by influencers you mean authentic voices, then more, definitely! But there’s a saturation issue. Not everyone can wield influence like a pro.
Jimmy: Among the bloggers you listed, who has the most interesting background story?
Naomi: Stephanie Brinkerhoff, hands down! From makeup artist to single mom of three, traveling the world—she’s living several life goals at once.
Jimmy: Do you think fashion blogging is more about self-expression or audience engagement these days?
Naomi: It used to be self-expression, but now, it’s heavily audience-driven. Bloggers know what clicks and often cater to that, for better or worse.
Jimmy: You’ve covered bloggers who are also mothers. How do they juggle these dual worlds?
Naomi: With a lot of caffeine and very little sleep! Seriously, though, they often merge their worlds into one, using it as content inspiration.
Jimmy: Aspyn Ovard integrates her husband into her fashion blog. Is fashion blogging becoming more like reality TV?
Naomi: In many ways, yes. It’s all about letting people into your life, and every story gets more views when there’s a personal touch.
Jimmy: How important is having a fashion identity, like Lauryn Hock’s ‘boho edge’? Can someone succeed without it?
Naomi: Identity is crucial, especially with so much content out there. It’s the hook that keeps your audience coming back.
Jimmy: Why do you focus specifically on Utah bloggers? Were there no contenders from other states?
Naomi: Oh, there are plenty, but Utah’s scene has an underrated charm that needs more love. Plus, there’s a sense of community here that’s unique.
Jimmy: Lastly, what’s the biggest no-no in fashion blogging today?
Naomi: Trying too hard to be someone you’re not. Authenticity might sound cliché, but it’s irreplaceable.
Jimmy: Thanks, Naomi! You’ve given us a lot to think about. The Utah fashion world seems like it’s in good hands.
Naomi: Thanks for having me, Jimmy. Let’s break some more fashion clichés soon!
